Training
The British Sub-Aqua Club is the UK governing body for the sport of
underwater swimming and offers courses of instruction in snorkel
diving and aqualung diving through its various membership schemes.
It also trains and qualifies members as instructors of these
activities. This Information Sheet lists the 'end objective' of each
training course as a statement of ability.

basic snorkelling skills and assessed as ready for open water

within restriction of conditions already encountered during training
and can dive with a Dive Leader (or higher) to expand experience

have sufficient experience or knowledge to be partnered with trainee

Divers are restricted to the maximum depth experienced during
training (15-20m), which can be extended to max. of 20m. Due to the
limitations on their rescue skills Ocean Divers can only conduct
dives where other suitably qualified divers who can act as surface

recommendations.
BSAC considers this qualification to be of a similar standard to
CMAS One Star Diver.

subsequently extend this progressively under the supervision of an
NQI to maximum depth of 35m. Sports Divers will have sufficient

BSAC considers this qualification to be of a similar standard to
CMAS Two Star Diver.

and skill to progressively extend both their own and others
experience. Dive Leaders are competent to marshal and supervise
branch dives to locations well known to the Branch or with

act as a Rescue manager. They can dive with any grade of diver to
expand their experience including trainee Ocean divers, on dives
supervised by a Dive Marshal.

as an Open Water Snorkel Instructor, while Advanced & National
Instructor with Advanced Lifesaver can register as an Advanced
